Dan Gottsegen Fine Arts 81 Garvin Hill Road - Woodstock
Dan Gottsegen is a painter whose work explores his love of the Vermont landscape and the natural environment. Critics have praised his work calling it poignant and meditative. A review of a recent show noted about one piece, for example, What could have been a scene of winter stillness instead becomes a better one of subtle movement, almost vibration. His paintings are known for their rich color, luminosity, and lyricism. Much of his earlier work was influenced by his twelve-year participation in a study of the raptor (bird of prey) migration in California. His recent work is inspired by the Vermont landscape. Gottsegen also does large scale public art projects, often collaborating with Landscape Architect Terry Boyle, most recently the Vermont Art in State Buildings Project for the new VT State Forensic Lab and Public Safety Building. He also works in a range of printmaking media, most often reduction woodcut. He was an Associate Professor of painting at UMass/ Lowell, and for many years a Full Professor at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. His work has been exhibited nationally including one-person shows in New York City, San Francisco, Boston, and Los Angeles. His work is in numerous private, public and museum collections. He is an official juried artist of The Vermont Arts Council. Work can be seen locally at the Westbranch Gallery in Stowe or in his studio by appointment: (802) 345-0735. More of his work can be seen at www.dangottsegen.com
