Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing in VermontThis ancient form of hiking offers people of all ages and abilities a way to get out in nature to enjoy the mystery and serenity of Winter. Snowshoeing has come a long way since the eskimos strapped on wood frames with gut strings. Today, you can enjoy state of the art snowshoes which can be rented at the Woodstock Ski Touring Center, Wilderness Trails in Quechee or Woodstock Sports and Fine Clothing .

Vermont has myriad woodland trails often used by snowmobile groups. Though alluring, snowmobiles and hikers do not mix. It is suggested you snowshoe on private property with permission or come to our village. Woodstock has a wealth of village trails that you can enjoy free. Drive down Court Street, behind the Woodstock Inn and turn right on Golf Avenue. You'll find the trail head on your left to serene woodland walks up Mt. Peg. At the summit, they intersect with trails maintained by the Woodstock Ski Touring Center for which you will need a day pass that can be purchased at the Center off Route 106.

Or enjoy the village trails off Mountain Avenue, just over the Covered Bridge. Continue straight after going through the bridge continuing on Mountain Avenue to Faulkner Park on your right. Trails are obvious on easy switchbacks up to the summit of Mt. Tom. Again, once at the peak, you will be on National Park Property that is groomed and maintained in the winter months by the Woodstock Ski Touring Center. Snowshoeing is best when done with a group and dogs should always be kept on a leash especially as they are not allowed on property maintained by the Woodstock Ski Touring Center in the winter.
