WORLD CLASS

National Geographic Traveler MagazineWe all know how special Vermont is. Now, National Geographic is telling everyone else.

Traveler, the magazine's monthly travel journal, recently rated 115 tourist destinations around the globe, and Vermont scored big.

Using criteria such as environmental and ecological quality, cultural integrity, aestethic appeal and outlook for the future, the Green Mountain State tied for sixth place with Kruger National Park, South Africa; Kyoto, Japan's historic district and Quebec City. Vermont ranked first among 16 U.S.locations rated.

Vermont is "one of the few places where a large percentage of the populace is committed to conservation/preservation over injudicious development", said one of the magazine's 200 panelists.

Norway's fjords ranked first; Costa del Sol, on Spain's Mediterranean coast, came in last.
