BarnArts Center for the Arts continues to bring riveting contemporary scripts to the Central Vermont Community Theater scene with Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz, opening November 8th at the Barnard Town Hall. Productions are at 7:30pm, Nov 8-9, 15-16 and 2pm on Nov 10 & 17. Other Desert Cities was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 2012 and will be directed by M. Carl Kaufman.

Other Desert Cities centers around the fictional character, writer Brooke Wyeth, who returns from the East Coast to Palm Springs, CA, after a six-year absence, to celebrate Christmas with her parents, her brother, and her aunt. Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history—a wound they don’t want reopened—as a way of helping herself heal from the tragedy still haunting her.

“In his most fully realized play to date, Mr. Baitz makes sure our sympathies keep shifting among the members of the wounded family portrayed here,” states a review by Ben Brantley for the New York Times . “Every one of them emerges as selfish, loving, cruel, compassionate, irritating, charming and just possibly heroic…leaves you feeling both moved and gratifyingly sated.”
